City councillors enjoy Newham tour

Members of Truro City Council were treated to a mini-tour of Newham Industrial Estate on Friday, June 5. Ten councillors from a variety of parties and wards were chauffeured to all corners of the estate, from Newham Road and Heron Way to Harvey Road and Higher Newham Lane.

Newham BID manager Sian Knights highlighted the facts and figures, success and challenges of the industrial hub. Newham is home to 180 businesses and 1,500 employees, generates £4m in business rates and has a cumulative turnover of £250m, equivalent to that of a small town like Camborne.

Councillors visited Macsalvors and were offered the opportunity to sit in a crane. They were also made aware of the delicate balance between heavy industry and personal leisure – including the Newham Trail for cyclists and pedestrians - and even residential properties, with 242 homes currently under construction on the new Gwel estate at Higher Newham Farm.

The visit ended with refreshments at Skinners Brewery. "I’d like to thank councillors for coming and being aware of the opportunities and challenges that Newham faces,” said Sian. “It was wonderful to be able to give them a 360-degree view of the estate, so they could appreciate its complex combination of industrial, leisure and residential requirements and the need to ensure all these different users can be satisfied safely by implementing adequate infrastructure.”

Cllr James Tucker (Conservative, Tregolls), said: “I’m really encouraged to see Newham BID businesses speaking with a strong, unified voice - it shows just how much positive change is possible when everyone is working from the same page. My hope is that we continue to safeguard space around Newham, so this thriving business community has room to grow.”
